2006/2007 season Match no.25 - Nationwide North

ALFRETON TOWN 0, Worksop Town 0
Match abandoned 52 minutes due to a waterlogged playing surface

WITH 52 minutes of Saturday’s local derby between Alfreton and Worksop Town played, referee Dean Mohareb called the captains and managers together and made the only sensible decision to call the match off.
After overnight heavy rain had cleared, another downpour an hour before kick-off had already rendered conditions difficult, and although both sides did their best to produce an entertaining first half, more torrential rain at half time made it impossible to continue.
The referee allowed play to restart, but with the ball not rolling or bouncing it all became farcical, and the abandonment was inevitable.
Alfreton, who included loan signing Danny Mayman from Northwich Victoria for his debut, had the better of the first half and created more chances.
And they almost grabbed a lead in the 22nd minute, when Ryan Clarke drilled a 30-yard ground shot from the right touchline. Keeper Ayden Duffy fumbled and the ball looked to be rolling over the line, but hit the post and stayed out, to his immense relief.
Earlier, Andy Tiday chipped a 20-yard effort onto the roof of the net in the ninth minute following good work on the left by Mark Barnard and Ashley Burbeary who supplied the cross.
And Emeka Nwadike’s 21st-minute header onto Burbeary’s corner met the same fate.
Worksop’s best effort was a 13th-minute angled shot from the left by Kevin Davies which forced Dale Roberts to tip over his bar.
Tiday’s burst of pace left Lee Thompson chasing shadows, but his 20-yard finish just cleared the angle..
And, four minutes before half time, Nathan Winder went close after picking up a half-clearance from Burbeary’s free kick.
“We were totally in control of the game, but sense had to prevail and although we were disappointed that the game was called off it was the right decision – someone could have been seriously injured,” said Reds assistant manager Darron Gee afterwards.
