Under-19s League Review for week commencing, Monday, April 28th, 2008

IN the Windsor Food Service North Midlands Under 19’s League it was a week when the Mini Shield Final attracted a large crowd, Shirebrook were promoted and Dinnington won a seven goal thriller.
In the Mini Shield final there was a crowd of over 150 at Carnarvon Road to see Alfreton Town lift the first of three possible trophies this season when after a splendid game they beat a gallant Teversal 1-0.
Alfreton started the better of the two sides and it was no surprise when they took the lead after only 11 minutes when Oliver Warren scored a fine goal.
Indeed it could have got worse for Teversal when two minutes later Alfreton were awarded a penalty but Dereck Dooley hit a post and from the rebound Jacob Walters-Lang hit the other post and the ball was scrambled clear.
After this Teversal showed why they had won the second division title with some lovely football but they simply could not get the ball into the net and Alfreton’s quick counter attacks always looked the more likely to find the net.
In the end Teversal were worthy losers whilst despite winning the Shield, Alfreton’s defence had to work hard before they won the night and credit Rotherham referee Dean Bradshaw who had as fine game.
Indeed the only blemish on the night was the serious injury to Alfreton Town player Chris Dodds who sadly broke his ankle and was rushed to the Kings Mill Hospital in Sutton where he under went an operation on Saturday morning.
The league committee on behalf of everyone connected with the League offer our best wishes to Chris and sincerely hope he makes a speedy and full recovery and that he will be playing again behalf too long.
In Division Two second-placed Shirebrook Town and third-placed Mickleover Sports clashed at Langwith Road with the winners being promoted to the First Division as runners up.
Mickleover Sports took an early lead but in a spirited fight back a fine hat-trick by Callum Wilkinson and one from Nathan Watson was enough to give Shirebrook a 4-2 success that takes them into Division One for the first time next season as runners up whilst Mickleover were gallant losers on the night.
In Division Three the last match of the season turned out to be a seven goal thriller as Dinnington Town finished fourth after beating Sutton Town 4-3 at Phoenix Park.
McDonnell (2), Cook and Langford scored their goals in a game that was a credit to both teams.
