WELLING UNITED v ALFRETON TOWN PREVIEW
Friday Jan 24, 2014
SATURDAY, JANUARY 25th, 3pm
By Matt Carter
Having gone well over two weeks without a game, Alfreton Town will be eager to return to competitive action on Saturday when they visit Welling United in Skrill Premier action.
The Reds saw their most recent fixture at home to Tamworth postponed due to a waterlogged Impact Arena pitch and they will be particularly keen to get back on the field, given that their two most recent league games were both defeats – firstly at Barnet, before a 4-1 loss at Lincoln.
Welling, promoted to the Conference Premier last season, have made a seamless transition to the life at the next level.
The home side currently sit comfortably in mid-table and well clear of any relegation danger, further that they enter this clash off the back of claiming a point at high flying Gateshead in midweek.
This will be the first time Alfreton have come up against the Conference South champions this season, and the sides have no recent history to draw upon.
The prolonged rest might just have come at the right time for Alfreton, considering the hectic festive period that they endured with six games in eighteen days prior to the enforced 18-day lay-off.
Reds manager Nicky Law will be hoping that with the batteries recharged, his side can return to the sort of form that saw them win five successive games over Christmas.
Law will unfortunately still be without John McGrath whose knee injury has forced him out for the season however, the Reds are boosted by the arrival of experienced striker Shaun Harrad, who has been snapped up following his release by Bury and he could well make his debut.
