Stockport County v Alfreton Town

Stockport County v Alfreton Town

Sunday Dec 24, 2017

Boxing Day sees the Reds begin the first of two back to back fixtures against Stockport County with a 3pm kick-off at Edgeley Park.

The Reds will be really keen to get a result as they have dropped to 18th place in the Vanarama National League North, following Saturday's 3-2 defeat to Boston United at the Impact Arena. They are now just one point above the relegation zone.

It was the Reds fifth straight home defeat in the league and a sixth league defeat in seven games. Alfreton will desperately be looking to salvage form and recover a troublesome slide down the table.

Despite pulling back a two goal defecit, Boston's Jordan Keane headed home ten minutes from time to once again complete another frustrating and 'if only' result at the Impact Arena.

The Reds have won two of their last four away outings, including our last away trip back in November, a 2-1 win at Telford United.

Stockport lie in 10th place after a 1-1 draw at neighbours Curzon Ashton. County took a 7th minute lead through Darren Stephenson. This was cancelled out by a 71st minute penalty converted by Niall Cummins after Scott Duxbury was adjudged to have fouled Ryan Brooke. The Hatters piled on the pressure in the later stages of the game, with Adam Thomas hitting the post. Former Red's loanee Callum Mantack was in the Hatters side.

The Stockport County side was: Hinchcliffe, Cowan, Duxbury, Ball, Smalley, O'Halloran, Mantack, Winter, Oswell, Stopforth, Stephenson

Subs: Dixon, Thomas, Clark, Ormson, McKenna

The current playing record of the Hatters is: Played 22, Won 8, Drawn 6, Lost 8, Points 30. They are four points outside the play-off positions and are unbeaten in their last two league games (W1, D1). Although County have only recorded one win in their last five league encounters.

The Hatters home form bodes an already hard test for the Reds, even tougher. County haven't tasted defeat at Edgeley Park since late October and are unbeaten in their last three at home.

Our last visit to Edgeley Park  was on the opening day of last season. An exciting encounter took place. The Reds came back from 3-1 down to level at 3-3 only to lose 4-3 to a goal in added on time at the end of the game by Gary Stopforth. The Red's scorers were Paul Clayton, Tom Allan and a 25 yard screamer from Dan Bradley.

An exciting game should be on offer before a large crowd.
