Southport v Alfreton Town

Southport v Alfreton Town

Thursday Mar 22, 2018

This Saturday Alfreton Town begin a busy week of fixtures when they visit the Merseyrail Stadium to take on Southport in another vital Vanarama National League North encounter.

Tuesday's 1-0 loss at home to AFC Telford United saw the Reds drop deeper into the relegation scrap towards the lower end of the table. The loss saw our advantage over the drop zone shrink from four points to just a single point with both Telford and Curzon Ashton having games in hand.

The performance was a noticably flat on Tuesday with the Reds lacking energy and tempo throughout the game. Attacking creativity went astray and with the last fixture before Tuesday night being ten days prior, this gap between fixtures appeared to have had more of an impact as Alfreton struggled.

Dangerous attacks did finally start to arrive but only when five minutes of the contest remained, it was a disappointing night for the players, fans and management alike as the Reds failed to build on back to back draws at York and Bradford PA.

The defeat to Telford was just our second in the last six in the league at home, but current form is a worry. The Reds haven't won in the last five league games (L3, D2) picking up just two points from a possible 15. We head to Southport tomorrow having drawn our last two away league outings but have not picked up three points on our travels since a 0-1 win at Blyth in late January.

Points are crucial for us if we are to lift ourselves out of the relegation scrap and a tough encounter is expected on Merseyside tomorrow afternoon.

We visit one of the form teams in the league in Southport who have risen to 10th place in the table having won their last five games. Their overall playing record this season is Played 33, Won 13, Drawn 8, Lost 12, Ponts 47. Their current manager is former Chesterfield favourite, Bolton and Preston striker Kevin Davies.

Port have been the talk of an incredible rise in the last few months with Kevin Davies taking over the side which sat in the relegation zone to now transforming them into play-off contenders. Their last defeat came at Kidderminster in late January but recent form has seen them win the last five.

We head to the Merseyrail Community Stadium with the hosts having won their last six home league games, they have conceded just the once at home in their last three games.

We are likely to face three former Reds in, Jon Worsnop, Jordan Richards and Billy Priestley.

Southport's last outing saw them defeat AFC Telford United 3-0 with goals from Elliot Osborne, Dion Charles and Jack Sampson.

Their line-up was: Worsnop, Richards, Kelly, Smith, Howson, Priestley, Osborne, Lynch, Grimshaw, Sampson, Charles.

Subs: Doyle, Fagan, Cocklerine, Halstead, Dawson.

We will be looking to overturn our meeting at the Impact Arena back in August when the Sandgrounders returned home with a  0-1 victory courtesy of a 57th minute goal from Steven Schumacher.

Reds boss Chris Moyses:

"That's what we are about (producing a reaction), we need to lift ourselves up, it's about being men and that's what men do. We regroup, we go again. It's another tough game, they are in fine form at home and doing really well at the moment. We will go there as always with a game plan, we need to prove to ourselves that we can do okay and we need to start winning games again and picking up points."
