Southport 1-3 Alfreton Town

Southport 1-3 Alfreton Town

Monday Mar 26, 2018

Three clinical finishes were enough to see Alfreton Town produce a memorable win at Southport on Saturday, the hosts having won their previous six home games, the Reds atoning for the abject performance against AFC Telford United in midweek.

A mere 90 seconds had elapsed when Tom Allan rose to head home a Brendon Daniels free-kick, the advantage doubled by the 38th minute when Daniels steered a delightful shot past former Reds' keeper John Worsnop from the edge of the area after Craig Westcarr had laid off a Tom Platt through-ball.

It may have been two goals from just two attacks, but with Southport applying almost constant pressure some solid and dogged defending stifled the home side, particularly when Dion Charles twice looked likely to score.

Viktor Johansson had an outstanding game between the sticks for Alfreton, somehow clawing away an Elliot Osborne free-kick destined for Oliver Marx on 17 minutes, then holding a low drive from Jack Sampson two minutes later, the first half concluding with Osborne's free-kick brushing the outside of the post.

The Reds were able to push forward with more freedom after the break, Platt firing wide from the edge of the area after a partial clearance from a Sam Topliss throw, but it still needed Johansson to turn behind a venomous drive from Charles before saving at close range from sub Dan Cockerline.

However it was another shrewd substitution that saw Nyal Bell replace Craig Westcarr in the 75th minute before running on to James Baxendale's through-ball to hammer the ball past Worsnop with his first touch of the game to put the Reds three goals to the good.

Southport scored at last with ten minutes remaining, Jason Gilchrist stabbing the loose ball home from close range after a hectic pin-ball scramble that included yet another save from Johansson and a string of desperate blocks.
