Salford City v Alfreton Town

Salford City v Alfreton Town

Wednesday Nov 1, 2017

Alfreton visit the newly refurbished Moor Lane Stadium (now Peninsula Stadium) this Saturday to take on newly top of the table Salford City in the Vanarama National League North, kick-off 3pm.

Salford currently head the table after Tuesday night's 1-0 win at Boston United courtesy of a 30th minute goal from Anthony Dudley.

They currently have 38 points from their 16 games with a playing record of won 12 drawn 2 lost 2, holding a one point lead over second placed Harrogate Town.

Last Saturday saw them win 2-1 at Bradford Park Avenue recovering from an early setback with goals from Mike Phenix after 70 minutes and Augustin Mafuta, three minutes later.

The Salford team was: Crocombe, Nottingham, Touray, Burton, Piergianni, Hogan, Dudley, Shelton, Phenix, Redshaw, Allen.

Subs: Mafuta, Askew.

The Reds head into the game off the back of a narrow 2-1 defeat at home to then league leaders Harrogate Town last weekend. After two in the opening seven minutes from the visitors, Alfreton came back through Tom Allan's header in the 34th minute. The Reds dominated the second half and were so unlucky to not to find a leveller after creating plenty of huge chances and a man of the match performance from the Harrogate goalkeeper.

Salford's ground is un-recognisable from last season when we lost 4-1 on a rainy September day, our consolation goal coming from Sam Smith in the 76th minute. With Sir Alex Ferguson opening the newly named Peninsula Stadium and Salford announcing free entry for all fans, as expected a tough fixture awaits us.

We fared better in the return fixture at the Impact Arena drawing 1-1. We opened the scoring through a 24th minute goal from Paul Clayton, with Salford equalising with a goal from Sam Walker on 79 minutes.

Reds boss John McDermott:

"It will be a tough game but we go there with confidence, we've had two good performances against Tamworth and Harrogate and we were bitterly disappointed to have not got anything last weekend after a really good showing."

"It will be a tough game of course they are top now and have free entry to the ground so there will be a big ground no doubt. But we are feeling good and have had good news out of the squad this week. Also Nabil joining us is excellent for us. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain, we are excited for it."

As already announced admission to Saturday's game is free for everyone, a large crowd is expected. There are still places available on the Supporter's Association transport, which leaves the Impact Arena at 9.15am calling at Chorlton-Cum-Hardy on the way.
