Report: Forest strike late to take friendly win

Alfreton Town 1-2 Nottingham Forest

Alfreton Town opened up the 2019/20 pre season campaign with a hard fought and impressive performance, as Championship neighbours Nottingham Forest claimed the win in blistering heat at the Impact on Saturday.

With a stunning crowd of 1799 in attendance at a sun bathed Impact Arena, they watched on as both sides produced an entertaining clash despite the extreme heat. With the likes of Lewis Grabban, Joe Lolley and João Carvalho all starting in the first half, Alfreton matched the visitors and stayed organised despite plenty of Forest possession.

Tom Nicholson produced the first big save of the day, stretching to palm away Grabban's steered finish away from the bottom corner after a cross from Arvin Appiah.

Dec Bacon gave the Reds the lead on 16 minutes capitalising on a Forest mistake at the back from Joe Worrall to finish into the corner past Costel Pantilimon.

Defending came thick and fast for the Reds with Danny East making a vital block after a Forest corner was taken short between Appiah and Brennan Johnson. Nicholson denied Grabban's header after the forward peeled off his man before Dom Smith denied the striker again with a good block in the box.

Lolley would curl a free kick over the bar from 23 yards before Forest did strike back on 40 minutes with Johnson finishing a well worked move inside our box as Grabban and Lolley combined to find Johnson who finished low into the corner past Nicholson. The Reds goalie would save well again from Grabban as he went clean through in the box minutes later.

The second half saw a fresh 11 for Forest with the likes of Tyler Walker, Sammi Ameobi, Ben Osborn and Ben Watson coming into the fray. Danny Clarke and shot-stopper Jack Atkinson came on for us, the second period had less openings but Shane Killock made a crucial block at the near post as Karim Ansarifard looked to flick a header in on 52.

Danny Clarke, on as a second half sub, curled over the bar after twisting into space on 57 minutes. Matty Cash then bundled an effort wide at the far post after a cross from the left.

Bobby Johnson, Morgan Brough and Kieron Hinchley were then introduced in the second half by Billy Heath, with Bobby firing over the bar before Atkinson saved superbly to deny Osborn's low free kick. Ameobi would then rattle the post before Brough broke free behind the Forest back line and did brilliantly to check back before seeing his shot blocked.

However with 82 gone, the visitors would take the lead as Ansarifard converted a cross from Ameobi from a few yards out. That proved the last action with a brilliant and positive opening account for the Reds, as they fell to a narrow defeat against a squad full of championship quality.

A special mention to Rob Brooks the Groundsman and all the volunteers who made the Impact Arena look absolutely incredible ahead of yesterday's game.

Next on the pre season schedule is the visit of League Two side Walsall next Saturday, kick off is 3pm with tickets available to purchase or you can pay on arrival.
