Read our report from Saturday's opening day thriller

Alfreton Town and Kidderminster Harriers served up a six-goal thriller at the lmpact Arena on Saturday in the curtain-raiser to the new National League North season, the Reds fielding no less than nine debutants with only Tom Platt and Luke Shiels surviving from last season.

On a roasting hot afternoon both sides took great credit for non-stop end-to-end action, with former Reds' favourite Dan Bradley setting the scene with a 16 yard rasper from a throw-in after 23 minutes.

Not to be outdone Alfreton came back through a Tom Platt header from a Bobby Johnson corner eight minutes later and then took the lead with the final action of the first half when Tom Denton headed home Craig King's cross from close range.

The Reds were asleep though when Kidderminster drew level just 70 seconds after the break, sub Kane Richards steering home a Sam Austin bye-line cross, and they took full advantage of a defensive lapse on 66 minutes when a right-wing cross was not dealt with and Joe lronside was left with a clear opportunity at the back post to restore the visitors' lead.

The Reds kept trying to atone and eventually won an 84th minute penalty when Josh Wilde was brought down by Billy Daniels after trickery in the box by sub Curtis Bateson, the spot-kick duly converted by Johnson despite a firm touch by keeper Brandon Hall.

The action, which came thick and fast, started in the opening couple of minutes with Reds' keeper Sam Ramsbottom having to head clear on the edge of his area before Denton headed wide from a King cross.

Shiels was cautioned in the eighth minute for a tackle on Ashley Chambers, then promptly cleared off the line from Liam Horsfall, the busy defender then making sure that Lee Vaughan's deep cross on 13 minutes was guided away from it's intended target.

A wayward pass let in Johnson on 19 minutes, but his delivery was a fraction in front of Denton, then after Kidderminster had opened the scoring Alfreton were a little wobbly for a few moments, Denton almost heading into his own net while Chambers leathered a shot against the crossbar.

That however probably proved to be the turning point with the Reds soon level, but a poor Ramsbottom clearance fell to Daniels who attempted to put the ball into the unguarded net from 30 yards - from the subsequent break a move that typified the game saw Richard Peniket scuff his shot wide from a Denton lay-off.

The action continued unabated after the break with the visitors edging matters as they turned around the deficit, but Jack Lane's towering header from a Johnson corner almost found the net in the 54th minute and Peniket was only just off target from a diminishing angle.
