Reds sign experienced defender Martin Riley

Monday Jul 2, 2018

ATFC are delighted to announce the signing of defender Martin Riley from Halifax Town.

Martin signs a one year deal at the Impact Arena.

The 31 year old defender has been well travelled, with his last club being Halifax last season before Riley was released at the end of the 2017/18 campaign.

Martin joined Halifax from Wrexham in May 2017 and was the Shaymen’s first signing after winning promotion to the National League. Martin came through the youth ranks at Wolverhampton Wanderers and then left for Shrewsbury Town where he failed to make a league appearance.

A move to Kidderminster Harriers followed in 2008 and after two years with Kiddy, Riley joined Cheltenham Town in 2010. Riley would then join Mansfield Town in 2011, making 33 appearances before joining Wrexham in 2012; winning the F.A. Trophy in the 2012/13 season.

A return to the Stags then came in 2013, before a move to Tranmere and a second spell at Wrexham in May 2016 followed, before signing for Halifax.

Manager Billy Heath:

“Martin is an absolutely brilliant signing for us, he has played for some really good clubs and is vastly experienced. His experience both at football league level as well as Conference Premier level is huge for us and it will add some know how to our back line.”

“He is a good player, a leader and very vocal which is always important at the back. We knew we needed to bring another centre half in and we wanted to make sure we brought the right one in, we are delighted to have Martin with us and his experience will add to our strengths.”
