REDS HOPING FOR A POSITIVE END TO JANUARY

REDS HOPING FOR A POSITIVE END TO JANUARY

Wednesday Jan 28, 2015

Alfreton Town FC begin what could be a hugely important week of Vanarama Conference football with a trip south to take on tenth-placed Woking on Saturday.

The early shoots of what can only be described as a disjointed, sporadically flowering season so far for the Reds, began with a 3-1 home defeat in the first game of the 2014/15 season against Woking way back on August 9.

This weekend’s game brings a disrupted January to a close. However, after seeing his side pick up four points from their last two outings, both away, manager Nicky Law will be keen to see the Reds extend their unbeaten run away from the Impact Arena to three games for the first time this season.

Saturday’s opponents Woking have had an excellent first half of the season so far and have only fallen out of the play-of places in the last three weeks although their fall from grace now includes an FA Trophy exit after a replay defeat at Dover Athletic on Tuesday night.

Following on are a brace of home games against Lincoln City next Tuesday (February 3) and relegation rivals Southport on Saturday, February 7.

Manager Law should have the boost of having midfield player Dan Bradley available again and the Reds will go into the run of games in good shape with only long-term injury victim Duane Courtney unavailable.

And with six pieces of January transfer window action already completed to bolster his squad, Law has plenty of options available in all areas of his side as Alfreton bid to put a season-defining run together to get themselves away from the relegation zone.

Law has so far handed eighteen-month contracts to striker Joe Ironside who joined the Reds on a transfer from Sheffield United; winger John Johnston upon his release from Crewe Alexandra and central defender Niall Heaton who has transferred from Bradford City. Also moving to the Impact Arena over the past few weeks are giant goalkeeper Jason Mooney – on loan to the end of the season from York City, central defender Callum Howe – on loan from Scunthorpe United and defender Joe Leesley who was snapped up last week after being released by Matlock Town.

With just a few days of the transfer window remaining, there is the possibility that Alfreton fans could yet see more new faces arriving with negotiations ongoing with several targets.
