Preview: Alfreton Town v Guiseley

Friday Sep 7, 2018

Alfreton Town come up against the first of the new boys to this season's National League North as relegated Guiseley visit the Impact Arena in matchday nine of the campaign, kick off is 3pm.

Saturday is the first meeting between the two sides since the 2010/11 Conference North season in which the Reds won the title and were promoted to the Conference Premier.

The Reds are back in action following last Saturday's 1-0 win at Darlington, Alfreton's fourth league win in a row, a feat only matched during the 2015/16 season.

Alfreton head into the fixture in blistering form, sitting in fourth place in the league table, Heath's Reds have won the last four games in the league and will be looking for a third home win in a row after two 3-1 wins over Southport and Blyth in the previous two home fixtures. The Reds have lost just once at home this season with Curzon Ashton snatching a 0-1 win in the 90th minute back in mid August.

The win over Darlington last weekend produced another new performance from the Reds, an early goal from Bobby Johnson after just 70 seconds looked to have sent Alfreton on their way to perhaps a romping victory but Darlington stuck in and had very good spells in both the first and second half. The Reds defended impressively against wave after wave of balls into the box from corners and free kicks and played the final ten minutes with ten men after a sending off for Luke Shiels.

But the character shone through yet again and Alfreton held on for what could have been a far more comfortable win but will take even more confidence heading into tomorrow's game after yet another three points on the road.

A historic fifth league win in a row sits on the horizon and the Reds will head into tomorrow's game firmly focused on the job in hand.

The visitors Guiseley are managed by joint bosses Marcus Bignot and former Reds assistant Russ O'Neill also with ex Reds forward Paul Clayton as assistant manager. We wish a warm welcome back to Russ and Paul ahead of tomorrow's game.

The Lions head into the contest on a six game unbeaten run (W1, D5) although a run which has seen five draws, the Lions will be looking to turn one point into three, far more consistently.

The Lions have drawn their last two league games and have yet to win away from home this season with their last three away games ending in draws.
