STRIKER RELEASED FROM HIS CONTRACT EARLY AS A REWARD

Alfreton Town have released striker Paul Clayton early from his contract so that he may take up the offer of a two-year deal with Vanarama Conference North side Harrogate Town where he has been on loan since Christmas Eve, 2014.
Clayton, 30, was out of contract with the Reds at the end of this season but club chairman Wayne Bradley explained the decision to let him go early.
“What Harrogate have offered Paul is exceptional and we have let him go early, without a fee, for the good of the lad so he can take them up on their offer. Paul has got a young family and we are not stepping in his way, but we have also let him go early as a way of thanking him for his sterling efforts for Alfreton Town over the past eight seasons” said Bradley.
“Harrogate are long-time admirers of Paul and they have offered him a deal for the next two years which we could not get anywhere near matching.
“I appreciate and accept he has been a local hero to many of our fans, but we have had numerous of those down the years, like Aden Flint, Kyle McFadzean, Ryan France, Mick Godber, and even way back to the legendary Johnny Harrison, but life goes on and Paul goes with all the best wishes in the world for the future from Alfreton Town FC” ended Bradley.
Tough
Clayton, 30, explained that it had been a tough decision to make to leave a club he joined back on New Year’s Eve in 2007. “It was never going to be an easy decision but this is too good an opportunity for me to pass up and it is time to move on” he said.
“I am pleased to say there are no hard feelings anywhere and it is nice that I can leave on good terms with the chairman, manager, and everyone else at Alfreton.
“I would like to thank the Alfreton supporters for their terrific support over the last eight seasons. The club has been a major part of me for the majority of my footballing career and will remain a part of me forever, especially the relationship with the fans.
"I have had an unbelievable time here that will stay with me forever. I have met some great people, unreal fans and a great chairman.
“I wish the club well in their bid to stay in the Conference Premier division and I am sure they will. You never know, I might end up back at Alfreton one day somewhere down the line, and I will definitely be looking out for the club’s results” ended Clayton.
For the record, Paul Clayton made his debut for Alfreton on January 1st, 2008, scoring in a 2-1 home win over Hucknall Town. It was the first of 311 appearances for the club, 80 of which came from the bench, and he leaves as the fifth highest appearance maker in the club’s history behind Johnny Harrison (561), Peter Ford (348), Matt Walsh (342) and Dave Griffiths (314).
Clayton scored 114 goals for the Reds, making him the third highest ever goalscorer for Alfreton behind Johnny Harrison (303) and Phil Stafford (121).
Paul won two England C international caps whilst with the Reds where he also won a Conference North title winners’ medal.
