O'NEILL: PLAYERS LOOKING FORWARD TO WREXHAM GAME
Tuesday Aug 19, 2014
Acting Alfreton Town Football Club manager Russ O’Neill says the Reds are looking ahead to this Saturday’s home clash with Wrexham.
With no points from their opening three league games so far, Alfreton go into the August Bank Holiday weekend bottom of the Vanarama Conference table.
The Reds are home to Wrexham on Saturday before travelling to Grimsby Town on August Bank Holiday Monday.
“Wrexham and Grimsby are what they are” said O’Neill.
“They are two big clubs who are both fancied for the title and they are going to be tough games, like all of our first six games of the season.
“But we have got to try and embrace it, try and improve again and, after last Saturday, I know we are looking forward to it.”
Alfreton went down 2-0 at Forest Green Rovers last weekend but O’Neill insists there were plenty of positives from a greatly improved performance.
“I just thought that with the exception of the result, all round it was a positive game, even from the supporters. The players certainly responded to the support from the fans and went across after the game to show their appreciation
“It was really disappointing in the changing room after the game but the players are determined to put things right
“I think if they could have played the Wrexham game at 4.45pm last Saturday, they would have rolled up their sleeves and gone out and played it, such is their determination to put things right.
“We had it in our mind when we were building the squad throughout summer that we wanted players of a good age and with points to prove and we have now got a very determined bunch of players
“Once we get it right, keep building, and the players know and understand what they have got to do and what is expected of them, then we will be a real handful.”
O’Neill will need a late fitness assessment of striker Paul Clayton’s troublesome blisters prior to the Wrexham game on Saturday. Other than that, there is a fully fit squad to choose from.
ATFC Supporters’ Association transport to the Grimsby Town game departs at 10am and seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 07857 558401.
