Nuneaton Town 2-2 Alfreton Town

Nuneaton Town 2-2 Alfreton Town

Monday Sep 4, 2017

Alfreton Town finally picked up their first away point of the season when they visited Liberty Way on Saturday, only denied a win by Tom Allan's unfortunate own goal which allowed Nuneaton Town to draw level in the 63rd minute.

?The Reds though had found themselves falling behind as early as the fourth minute, when a short corner culminated in Jordan Nicholson lashing home the loose ball, but the Reds were level after 11 minutes when Tom Platt sent Chris Sharp one-on-one with keeper Dean Lyness for a sublime finish.

Allan fired wide from distance before Bradley Wood let rip with a scorcher that Lyness held, but in response Nicholson clipped the top of the crossbar with a dipping shot in the 27th minute.

Brady Hickey was next to be denied by Reds' keeper Chris Elliott, who went on to make a good save from Ashley Chambers, the first half concluding with Hickey heading on to the roof of the net from a Nicholson cross.

Seven minutes into the second half Alfreton received the breakthrough they had been seeking when Craig Westcarr was brought down by Lyness as he chased Bradley Wood's through-ball, the Nuneaton keeper probably only escaping a red card by virtue of the recent Double Jeopardy law - Westcarr dusted himself down to plant the penalty low into the left-hand corner of the net.

lronically the hosts only salvaged a draw through Allan's own goal, which stemmed from another corner - the fourth goal the Reds have conceded from a corner in their last two away games - although Elliott needed to make a couple of outstanding saves from Chambers late on.

Allan should have scored with a close-range header that bounced too sharply before disappearing over the bar, sub Cieron Keane was denied by Lyness with an absolute thunderbolt and Brody Robertson almost snatched it at the end with a deflected shot that reared up over the target.
