North Ferriby United v Alfreton Town

North Ferriby United v Alfreton Town

Wednesday Jan 3, 2018

The Reds make their first away trip of the New Year this Saturday when they visit Humberside to take on North Ferriby United in the Vanarama National League North with the game kicking off at 3pm.

This game is now a massive one for Alfreton as they have now slumped into the relegation places after the 3-1 defeat to Stockport County at the Impact Arena on New Years Day. It was the Reds sixth straight home defeat and a eighth defeat in the last nine league games.

Nothing less than three points will do against the League's basement side who have only won one match this season to date, a surprising 1-0 win at Blyth Spartans. They currently have just seven points following a further four draws.

The Villager's last game on New Years Day saw them go down 2-0 to York City at Bootham Crescent following their 4-1 home defeat to them on Boxing Day, both York goals coming from Jon Parkin.

The North Ferriby United team was: Durrant, Cooke, Walters, Forrester, Clappison, Skelton ( sent off ), Bolder, Russell, Stewart, Agnew and Davidson.

Subs: Lofts, Slew, Kyel, Johnson, Exall.

When the two sides met back in August at the Impact Arena, the Reds took all three points with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a Billy Priestley header after 70 minutes.

Bill Draper informs us of some interesting encounters between the two sides in the past.

A highly controversial match took place at Church Road on the 11th of September 1999, (oddly enough our first away game of the season), in our first season back in the Northern Counties East League after relegation from the Northern Premier League.

We were quickly 3-1 up against a strong North Ferriby side, but a few minutes before half-time the referee sent off Danny Anson for a second yellow card- however the Alfreton midfielder had not been booked initially ( a case of mistaken identity ). The referee was advised of his mistake during the interval and compounded his error by allowing Anson to resume playing for the second half. Ferriby went on to claw the game back to 3-3 but naturally lodged an appeal against the referees decision.

A number of weeks later the governing body of the league decided to declare the result null and void, reprimanding the official and ordering the game to be replayed. This duly happened and we lost the game 2-5.

Another interesting game resulted in a 2-2 draw at Church Road in December 2002, bringing to an end a remarkable run of 17 consecutive wins in all competitions including Northern Premier First Division, Northern Premier League Cup, FA Trophy and a 3-0 Derbyshire Senior Cup win over Ripley Town.

Manager David Lloyd and his assistant Charlie Williamson went on to record 26 consecutive games without defeat in that title winning season.

Reds boss John McDermott:

"It's a must win game definately, they haven't won many but they will look at us and say they aren't doing too well either. They have got nothing to lose and they'll have a right go. But we need to dust ourselves down and go again and make sure we do the job and get ourselves out of the position that we are in."

"It's hard for people in charge when you're not winning and if you aren't winning games it's difficult for me, the players themselves and the fans who pay good money to come here. But I don't want the fans to pay good money to see their team get beat every week, that's not why I came here. We head there on Saturday aiming to turn it around."

Transport to Saturday's game leaves the Impact Arena at 9.30 am. Anyone interested please call Mark Thorpe on 07857558401.
