Read our report as the Reds claimed a dominant victory at the league's bottom club on Saturday

Alfreton Town travelled to Humberside on Saturday knowing that nothing less than a win was essential against the National League North's basement club North Ferriby United if they were to avoid the threat of relegation.

As it happened the Reds produced a professional and solid performance, despite surviving an early scare when Carl Stewart struck the crossbar for the hosts inside 90 seconds, going on to keep a clean sheet in an away win for the first time in 11 months.

Brendon Daniels set up the opening goal with a 17th minute corner that was delivered straight out of a setting sun, allowing Luke Shiels to head home at the near post as defenders and keeper floundered.

Reds keeper Chris Elliott then needed a second attempt to hold a low drive from Jamie Forrester, but by the 20th minute Bradley Wood's perfect pass had sent Chris Sharp on course for goal, and the freshly restored striker finished calmly by slotting past stranded Ross Durrant to double Alfreton's lead.

Ferriby were not prepared to lie down though and a firm strike by Jordan Cooke needed saving by Elliott, but the hosts were reduced to ten men shortly afterwards.

Frank Mulhern embarked on a withering central run in the 31st minute before being brought down on the edge of the area by Bobby Johnson, who was deemed to have prevented a goal-scoring chance and was shown the red card.

Daniels' free-kick was parried on the line by the keeper, with the rebound falling behind Mulhern before being cleared. Forrester tried to emulate Mulhern in response for Ferriby with a promising run, only to drag his shot wide, then at the other end Durrant somehow saved from Sharp at point-blank range from a Tom Allan cross.

lt was 3-0 to Alfreton as the first half entered stoppage time, new defender Pierce Bird, on a youth loan from Notts. County, marking an impressive debut with a towering header to convert another Daniels free-kick.

Not a great deal occurred after the break, North Ferriby though making a few attempts that were comfortably dealt with by the Reds, who in turn saw out a vital win in a manner that had not been evident in recent games.

There were however a couple of noteworthy chances with Wood launching a stinging drive that Durrant dealt with on 53 minutes, then Sharp forced a 67th minute corner that led to his header being hacked off the line by Cooke.
