Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law played down the double substition he made mid-way through the second half at Tamworth which proved to be inspired.

Both Jamie Jackson and John Johnston were thrown into the fray with the Reds 2-0 down in the Emirates FA Cup second qualifying round tie and both went on to score crucial goals as the Reds came from behind to win 3-2.

"l think they (the subsituttions) were desperation if l'm honest" said Law.

"For a game that we started well in and looked like we were going to be in control of, we didn't do it. We matched them physically and, fair play to them, we were far superior on the height side of things, but give them credit, they matched us and played more than we did - we weren't getting on the ball enough' hence the substitution early doors.

"We put (Andi) Thanoj on to try and get on the ball and if you're going to play in that midfield three role you've got to get on the ball and make the team tick, and we didn't do that.

"They've scored with their first shot on target, took a bit of a deflection, but the lead up to the goal was poor - we haven't reacted quick enough to the short corner and then to go 2-0 down with another free header from a corner or free-kick you (then) think that's it.

"Then Jamie Jackson came on, which is a frustration because when he comes on and does that he can be a real handful to anybody with that pace and that directness, and disappointingly he doesn't do it enough - we try to encourage him to do it and he's come on and made a difference for us.

"Young Johnno's (John Jonston) come on and got a great goal - (a) stupid sending off - he's got a chance of a 50-50 before that and he doesn't make it, then goes for retribution and it's a two-footed tackle - there's no argument - it's a straight red - we could all see that.

"l was disappointed in terms of big parts of the performance - we didn't play enough, we didn't take enough responsibility with the ball - didn't have enough thought when we had the ball but to go 2-0 down then 3-2 shows character and it's a good win - a bit of money for the club and we're in the next round."
