Matlock Town v Alfreton Town

Matlock Town v Alfreton Town

Monday Feb 6, 2017

Tomorrow ( Tuesday) sees the Reds visit the DCJ Group Arena for the Derbyshire Senior Cup Semi-final with Matlock Town, Kick off 7-45 pm. Admission will be £7 Adults £4 concessions.

Matlock like the Reds come into the game after a win on Saturday, the Gladiators defeating Halesowen Town 2-1 in their Evostik Northern Premier League, Premier Division fixture at the DCJ Group Arena. Matlock played two thirds of the game with ten men after the dismissal of new signing Cleveland Taylor after 27 minutes. Michael William then put them ahead with a fine strike ten minutes later. Halesowen got back on level terms after 70 minutes but Matlock bagged a dramatic winner in the last minute through Nico Degirolamo.

The Gladiators had lost their previous three games but still sit within striking distance of the play-offs with games in hand, so a difficult encounter is expected.

The Reds go into the game on the back of a fine 2-0 win at Gainsborough Trinity, which saw the emotional farewell of Nicky Law after ten years as manager.

The game will bring back memories to some,  of an exciting encounter in the Midland League some fifty years ago. Alfreton eventually coming out on top 3-2 in a game played on a quagmire of a pitch at Causeway Lane.

Peter Drury and Keith Howarth put the Reds 2-0 up by half-time, then John Newton tripped Ady Howard in the area got booked and Howard scored from the spot.

A classic case of de ja vu as Newton once again tripped Howard  in the area got booked again (no yellow cards in those days) and was sent off. Howard once again scored from the spot.

2-2 and into the last  few moments Howarth embarked on an exhausting run the full length of the field before slotting the ball past the Matlock keeper Max Ashmore for an  excellent 3-2 win.

Alfreton Town : John Mycroft, John Newton, Mick Bagnall, Alan Brown, Peter Brent, Keith Howarth, Brian Harris, Peter Johnson, Trevor Whittaker, John Harrison, Peter Drury

Memories provided  as ever by Bill Draper.
