Mason Springthorpe moves on loan to Sutton Coldfield

Friday Aug 11, 2017

Alfreton Town can announce that goalkeeper Mason Springthorpe has moved to Sutton Coldfield on a months loan.

Springthorpe started in Shrewsbury Town’s youth system and in February 2011 secured a £125,000 move to Everton. He was included in the Toffees matchday squad in March 2013, Everton defeating Reading 2-1 at Goodison Park. Further unused substitute appearances followed against Wigan in the FA Cup and Manchester City in the league.

In January 2014, Mason was loaned to Woking for a month and made his debut the following day as Woking were beaten by Chester. His second appearance came in a 2-2 draw with Lincoln City five days later. In May 2014, Springthorpe, who had been a regular for Everton's Under-21 team, was released by manager Roberto Martínez.

In August, he returned to his native Shropshire, signing for Ellesmere Rangers. In January 2015 Mason signed for League One Fleetwood Town but just made one appearance. Moves to Telford United and then Northwich Victoria on loan followed before a permanent switch to Northwich was completed. Mason then moved to Southport and made just two appearances.

Springthorpe joined the Reds in June 2017 and was involved in our pre-season schedule.

Reds Boss John McDermott was pleased to have Mason gaining valuable minutes:

"It's important that Mason gets valuable minutes and the move to Evo-Stik prem side Sutton Coldfield will be good for him. Being an outfield player often means you have to work on fitness and other training. Mason needs lots of training and one to ones in order to keep his match fitness and awareness."

"He needs games and it's a good division for him to go to, his attitude has been excellent, he's willing to work and he knows he's got to be fit. It will be a good experience for him and it will be crucial to his fitness, sharpness and development."
