Macca: 'It will be a tough game, it's the FA Cup'

Friday Sep 15, 2017

Reds Boss John McDermott reflects back on Alfreton's 1-1 draw with Brackley Town on Tuesday night and previews the visit of AFC Rushden and Diamonds in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round tomorrow afternoon.

The Reds battled back from Lee Ndlovu's 15th minute opener on Tuesday night with Craig Westcarr levelling the scores three minutes later. Alfreton traded chances after chances with the visitors in an entertaining draw, a result which extended the Reds unbeaten run to five games.

Macca spoke to Amar Sharma:

"It was a good point for us on Tuesday, both teams had chances and they could have snatched it at the end and they put us under pressure towards the end but equally we could have had more in the first half. We've held our own against a good side, a fancied side and a team that have spent and have a big budget and have a lot of quality."

"We are getting better and we held our own against a side in third place, I said to the lads afterwards there is nothing to fear in this league, this result was a massive step for us because this was about belief for the next four to five games coming up. Nothing to fear going away from home playing teams in and around us."

"The most important thing is to beat the teams below us, beat the teams on our shirt tails and try not to get beat by the teams around us. We did that and the conditions were horrendous, the rain switched around and it made passing difficult."

Macca was also pleased with the grit the Reds showed:

"I was really pleased with the grit we showed, the determination, it was a good sign. The nitty-gritty, we dug in. We had a few knocks and scrapes, Westy had a cut on his chin, Billy was cut but that is what it's about. If we want to win things we need to be prepared to get cut."

"We were disappointed with how we conceded the first goal but it was a massive positive for us the way we responded. We reacted brilliantly, scored a good goal and I thought we were going to get another one, we looked dangerous."

"Platty has done his hamstring so he may be out for a while, so that is a loss for us. But that is what the squad is for."

Next, Alfreton start their FA Cup campaign with the visit of AFC Rushden and Diamonds to the Impact Arena tomorrow afternoon, Macca was excited for the tie:

"We are hoping for better weather for a start! It will be a tough game, cup games are always hard, it's the FA Cup. They will come here and think beautiful pitch, far better from what they probably play on at some grounds, they will fancy themselves."

"But for us it's the mental test, we've held up the physical side, it's about being ruthless. We're in good form and we are getting better, in the physical sense, getting more gritty about ourselves and trying to keep clean sheets. It will be nice to come away from the league and we will enjoy the occasion as always with the FA Cup."

Alfreton v AFC Rushden and Diamonds in the FA Cup kicks off at 3pm tomorrow afternoon.
