Macca bemoans defending in Stockport loss

Tuesday Jan 2, 2018

Reds manager John McDermott gives his assessment after yesterday's 3-1 defeat to Stockport.

Alfreton Town Boss John McDermott gives his verdict after the Reds were beaten for the sixth home game in a row, losing 3-1 to Stockport on New Years Day.

A performance which lacked fire, urgency and quality, the Reds conceded three goals from set pieces and scored a late consolation from the penalty spot by Brendon Daniels. The result leaves the Reds now in the relegation zone, two points from safety after losing their eighth league game in the last nine.

Macca on the result:

"The sending off was a big call, he's given a goal kick when it should have been a corner, Westy's frustrated with it and called towards the linesman and you cant do something like that. But in football you do have to deal with frustration and anger from players at all levels. It's soft to send him off because of that and we had to change the shape, it put us on the back foot."

"We haven't lost because of ten men, the red card you can say is right within the laws of the game but i've seen that kind of behaviour at higher levels without discipline."

On the Reds positivity despite being a man down and a goal down after the red card:

"We had a good go after that, between the boxes we played well and the fans were with us, we had some good openings and we had to deal with the situation and I thought we did okay in creating openings after the red card."

On set pieces:

"The problem has been set pieces. Two corners and a free kick, a man has run off in the box and it's a free volley. You have got to do your job, and that's not down to tactics or motivation."

"Thought the free kick was harsh, looked a good tackle but the way we deal with that as well is poor. It's a great ball in but the ball is up in the air twice and It's soft defending to let them head it in from a yard. Then the next one it's unfortunate for Chris whose knocked it into his own net."

"It's deflating for me as the manager, it deflates the fans and the fans are on to you, blaming you and rightfully so. Listen we haven't won since November in the league and that's the reason we've been losing games, not the shape or the play it's because we haven't defended our own box good enough all season."

On the Reds current form and league position:

"I've got to look at the positives from the game, we created chances and the lads showed effort but I can't knock the players, their keeper has made countless saves in the game. He's done his job and we haven't done ours in the box, they defended their box better than us."

"It's been decision making all season that has cost us, but when do you stop bringing players in. Do I bring in another centre half or a keeper in because he's made a mistake? At some point the mistakes need to stop, if we keep defending like that the set pieces other teams get will always be dangerous. Do I need to shout at the lads more, I dont know if that will help, the lads need to want to head a ball. It's too easy."

"It's not nice for any of us, especially the fans but we need to keep going. "

The crucial visit to North Ferriby on Saturday:

It's a must win game definately, they haven't won many but they will look at us and say they aren't doing too well either. They have got nothing to lose and they'll have a right go. But we need to dust ourselves down and go again and make sure we do the job and get ourselves out of the position that we are in."

"It's hard for people in charge when you're not winning and if you aren't winning games it's difficult for me, the players themselves and the fans who pay good money to come here. But I don't want the fans to pay good money to see their team get beat every week, that's not why I came here. We head there on Saturday aiming to turn it around."
