After putting together a seven-game unbeaten run which had hauled Alfreton Town out of the relegation zone, Reds manager Nicky Law felt his side let themselves down in the 4-0 defeat at Wrexham on Easter Saturday.

"To do what we've done we've had to be really at it 100 per cent and we haven't done that today. We've come here, we haven't performed well. We've come up against a good team of players that on the day have punished us, because we've fallen short" reflected Law.

"If you come and you don't match teams and you don't get on top of teams and you let them play and they're better players than you are then that's what happens.

"We started okay, then the first time we've had to defend we've not (done it) - it's disappointing, that's gone, but we move on.

"Wrexham are full-time footballers, we are part-timers . It's disappointing. We've had a good chat in the dressing room, we've let ourselves down today - let's give Wrexham some credit, they've got some good footballers, and l'm sure if they'd performed like that for the remainder of the season they wouldn't have given their manager the sack.

"That's life, that's how it goes - l've just said to the lads in there we make sure we come back Monday. We're aware of where we've fallen short - it's been highlighted where we've gone wrong and what we've not done and we've got to put right against Grimsby. "

Asked about debutant goalkeeper Tom Flynn's performance, Law added: "If l'm honest in the first ten minutes without him it could have been 3-0, he's made a save from the overhead kick - it's hit him and l don't think he knew anything about it and he's done well .

"It was a big blow to lose Jason [Mooney] - that's the situation we find ourselves in - it wasn't a situation that l thought would happen but it did. It's massively disappointing, but we move on from there and go into the next game."

Asked if striker Jake Speight might merit a start against Grimsby, Law ended: "l think so. l wasn't trying to be clever in any way, shape or form, changing a side that did well last week, but l thought l'd give players a go with Monday in mind - sometimes you make a substitution and it works for you, sometimes you change and put players in and it doesn't work, and today it didn't work for us."
