LAW RELIEF AFTER CUP WIN

LAW RELIEF AFTER CUP WIN

Wednesday Jan 13, 2016

Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law was a relieved man after seeing his side come through Tuesday evening’s Derbyshire Senior Cup third round tie against Whaley Bridge Athletic unscathed.

The Reds had too much fire power for the Cheshire League-based visitors and Law’s side still ran out fairly comfortable 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Jamie Jackson, Joe Ironside and Sam Jones despite seeing a late Jordan Robertson penalty saved.

One of the most pleasing aspects from the win, which extended Alfreton’s fine recent form to four wins and a draw from the last five outings in all competitions, was the fact that there were no further injuries picked up during the win, particularly with both Andi Thanoj and Niall Heaton having to sit out the tie.

Law was just glad to get the game out of the way after one abandonment and two postponements of the tie.

“I am pleased we have got the game played and with the result but perhaps not so much the performance” reflected Law.

“It was a useful exercise from the point of getting some valuable pitch minutes into some of the players who have not been featuring regularly lately, but we can still do better.”

The win put Alfreton into the quarter finals of the competition where they will host Midland Football League Premier Division side Long Eaton United at the Impact Arena next Tuesday, January 19th with a 7.45pm kick-off.

And that will be the Reds’ next game as they are without a league fixture this Saturday due to Curzon Ashton’s continued involvement in the FA Trophy.

“We could really have done with playing on Saturday to keep the momentum going” said Law who will now concentrate his efforts to freshen his squad up.

“I may need to try and bring in a couple of additional players in an effort to keep one or two people on their toes and enable me to shuffle the pack which is something I need to be able to because I do not have enough options in certain areas to change things at the minute” ended Law.

Alfreton’s next Vanarama National League North game is at home to Chorley on Saturday, January 23 (3pm).
