LAW PRAISES SQUAD FOR IMPROVEMENT

Wednesday Dec 28, 2011

ALFRETON Town boss Nicky Law has praised his squad for their marked improvement over the past month which has given them a great chance of surviving in the Blue Square Bet Premier Division.
Just over a month ago, Law's side were eight points adrift of safety, but after ending 2011 on a real high note by thrashing Tamworth 5-2 at the Impact Arena on Boxing Day, the Reds have climbed out of the bottom two and moved to within just one point of getting out of the relegation zone.
"We have been down in the bottom reaches all season but we do not want to get used to it and we don't like it" said Law.
"We have changed certain things about our play over the last four to five weeks and I think we are now starting to get the rewards for them. I have said that if we can get to the 20 points mark at the turn of the season, we will kick on.
"It was a fantastic result, a great team performance, and a great scoreline, but all we did against Tamworth was put the ball in the net which is something we didn't do against Stockport, Barrow and Southport.
"If we had done that, we would have had more points on the board and be out of the bottom four already. Goals change games and it was great to see five different players on the scoresheet.
"It is a completely different ball game when you are putting the ball in the net. You are not going to score five every week, and ok, there were some defensive errors from them, but they don't make them if you don't put them under pressure.
"There is no getting away from it, we have beaten a very good team and we have gone and knocked five by them. But the only difference from the previous week was that the chances were finished off."
New Year's Day sees the Reds travel to Tamworth for the return fixture and Law is not expecting them to be affected by their forthcoming trip to Everton for an FA Cup third round tie just six days later.
"They will be a bit of a wounded animal after our win. But even with the FA Cup game coming up, I don't think for one minute that they will slack off . They will go out and play for the day and we are going to have to put another big shift in if we are to get anything from the game."
Transport
Kick-off at the Lamb is 3pm and ATFC Supporters' Association official transport will depart at 12.45pm. Seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251.
The coach will go straight to the ground but Reds fans can welcome in the New Year in the Reds Bar which will be open from 11.30am.
The first home game of 2012 is on Saturday, January 7 when Liam Hearn makes his first return to the Impact Arena since moving to Grimsby Town in the summer.
