LAW DISAPPOINTED IN MANNER OF DEFEAT

Wednesday Mar 2, 2016

Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law had no complaints after seeing his side’s thirteen-game unbeaten run ended in a 3-2 home defeat by bottom-of-the-table AFC Telford United on Tuesday night.

The Reds led 2-1 with just fourteen minutes left and Law slammed his side’s defensive performance as they conceded two goals in the space of a matter of minutes to throw away a winning position.

The defeat, a first in 2016 and a first in the league in eleven games, leaves Alfreton in ninth place ten points behind the play-offs with ten games left.

“I have no complaints. I am disappointed in the way we have lost. We scored two good goals but defensively we were not good enough” reflected Law.

“As much as I am loathed to say it, they (Telford) perhaps wanted it more than us on the night.

“Telford had got everything to play for, they are fighting for their lives. They put themselves on the line and got five or six great blocks on things that have dropped in their six yard box and we have hit the post.

“We were trying to protect a thirteen-game unbeaten run and still looking to close the gap on the play-offs so to go and give it up like that is the disappointing thing.

“Give them (Telford) credit. They have come and had a right go. We get in front twice and then 30 seconds from kick-off after the second one we have conceded a goal and it’s 2-2.

“We have not defended a basic ball into the box and for the winning goal we have not defended well enough. It’s a free kick, we have not picked up in the box and they score.

“The players that have been big for us during the good run have not performed for us tonight.

“The three goals we gave away were like the ones we shipped during our poor run pre-Christmas. It’s just basic defending and if you cannot do that you are going to lose games of football. “We move on” ended Law.

Alfreton now begin a run of three successive away games on Saturday when they travel to face Stalybridge Celtic. Kick-off at Bower Fold is 3pm.
Next Tuesday the Reds travel to face in-form Worcester City at Kidderminster Harriers’ Aggborough ground (7.45pm). Saturday, March 12th sees a trip to Hednesford Town.

ATFC Supporters’ Association transport to Stalybridge will depart at 9.45am and at 4.45pm to Worcester next Tuesday. Seats for both games can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 07857 558401.
