IT'S GOING TO BE A HECTIC FINALE
Tuesday Mar 26, 2013
TWO postponements in a matter of days has left Alfreton Town with some work still to do to ensure their Blue Square Premier Division status for a third successive season and not a lot of time to do it in.
The Reds had last Saturday's trip to Braintree Town and Tuesday evening's scheduled home game against Tamworth postponed due to unfit pitches, and, with an earlier than usual finish to the end of the season of April 20, Nicky Law's side are now facing a final run in of eight games in 23 days.
That is a punishing schedule by any definition, and although one or two clubs are slightly worse off, it is just about as bad as it gets.
Fortunately, the Reds have an almost full strength squad going into the season's climax with only goalkeeper Phil Barnes, just about recovered from injury, unavailable, and he is likely to be back within the next week or so.
After Tuesday night's fixtures that did get played, the Reds are five points clear of the relegation places with games in hand on most of their rivals but they will be keen to get to a total of 50 points which would, barring an incredible turn around of form and results elsewhere, guarantee safety.
Last Saturday's game at Braintree Town has been rearranged for this Thursday, March 28th and that is quickly followed by a home game on Easter Saturday against a resurgent Lincoln City side who have won three of their last five games but who find themselves still involved in a fight against relegation due to having played more games than their rivals.
Easter Monday brings a trip to Southport who have played two games more than Alfreton and are two places and two points below the Reds with Lincoln sandwiched inbetween.
A decent points haul of anything between three and five points from the next three games, albeit over a short space of time, would almost undoubtedly secure Alfreton their place in next season's Conference Premier Division.
