Friendly: Selston 2-1 Alfreton Town

Friendly: Selston 2-1 Alfreton Town

Wednesday Sep 27, 2017

It was a big night for Selston FC when they entertained Alfreton Town in a friendly to celebrate the opening of their new floodlights on Tuesday night at the Parish Hall.

The hosts though clearly hadn't read the script as they ran out worthy 2-1 winners through goals by Dominic Airey and Lee Sutton, with Ryan Jennings bagging the Reds' goal.

Alfreton manager John McDermott fielded a mixture of first teamers, fringe players and academics, with wholesale changes made at half-time that meant only Keiran Hinchley, Karl Cunningham and Jack Weatherer played the full 90 minutes, none of whom have yet tasted first team football for the Reds.

Alfreton certainly enjoyed the majority of the play but Selston took their chances when they arose, Airey taking full advantage of a sloppy back-pass from MoZiah Solassie to score the opener in the eighth minute.

In response Kegan Etherington headed just wide from a Solassie cross and Jamie Renshaw had to hack a Cunningham shot off the line before Chris Sharp had a headed goal disallowed for pushing from an Andre Johnson cross.

Johnson had a golden opportunity to draw the Reds level when he was brought down by Grant Hackett in the 36th minute, only to see his penalty brilliantly saved by home keeper Jake Ball, who pushed it against his left-hand upright, Airey almost notched another goal for Selston two minutes before half-time, but saw his shot saved by Matt Hill. then in added time Sharp fired over from a Brody Robertson cross.

Renshaw had to clear off the line again as Cunningham met an astute Morgan Brough cross in the 51st minute, then a towering back post header from Tom Allan was parried from another Brough delivery.

Route one tactics brought Selston the decisive second goal in the 73rd minute, Lee Sutton chasing a goal-kick to steer the ball past Chris Elliott, then a rarity occurred five minutes later with an indirect free-kick awarded on the edge of the six yard box after a strong back-pass from Allan was fielded by Elliott.

The final goal of the game came seven minutes from time with Jennings blasting the ball into the roof of the net from 20 yards, only to miss two more chances from similar range as Alfreton pressed in vain for a face-saving equaliser.
