BLUE SQUARE BET PREMIER - NEW YEAR'S DAY BETTING PREVIEW
Friday Dec 30, 2011
BY ALAN ALGER FROM BLUE SQUARE
NEW Years' Day will see a reverse of the Boxing Day fixtures played throughout the three Blue Square divisions.
Wrexham moved two points clear in the Blue Square Bet Premier table with a win at Telford and will be strong odds-on favourites at 2/7 to complete a double over Andy Sinton's side.
The Red Dragons are now 13/8 second favourites for the title behind favourites Fleetwood Town.
The Cod Army rescued a point at home to Southport in a game they were odds-on to win. That has seen their price for automatic promotion drift to 11/8. Micky Mellon's team are narrow 13/10 favourites for their trip to Haig Avenue. A Southport win is offered at 17/10.
Luton Town moved to 7/1 for the title with a 5-0 beating of crisis club Kettering Town. That made back-to-back wins for Gary Brabin's side but the important six points have been achieved in facile fashion against nine-man Tamworth and the beleaguered Poppies.
They can make it a hat-trick of wins at Nene Park at restrictive odds of 1/4 but the important test as to whether they have turned the corner will come towards the end of January.
A draw at Mansfield Town made it just two wins in eight for York City and their title odds are right out to 9/1.
The Minstermen are 8/11 favourites for the reverse game.
Kidderminster extended their unbeaten run to seven games with a 1-0 win over Forest Green and have been cut to 22/1 in the outright market. It was this time last year that Steve Burr's team made impressive headway in the table only to take seven points from a possible 21 in the last few weeks and fail to make the play-offs.
A lot is going to depend on their ability to keep Jamille Matt, who has been subject to offers. If they complete a double at the New Lawn on Sunday then they'll be cut to around 7/1 to go up by any means. The match prices pitch The Harriers as the 7/4 outsiders, but it could be a price worth chancing against a Rovers side who have won just two of their last six.
Cambridge United halted their winless run and are still hanging on to contention in the promotion market. They're 6/5 favourites to win at Braintree on Sunday to keep on track.
Gateshead have been well backed to win at Darlington despite dropping two points to a late equaliser on Monday.
Darlo are still handling a number of situation off the pitch meaning that punters have latched onto their opponents, backing them from 15/8 into 13/8.
Grimsby Town are strong 4/6 favourites to open up a 12 point gap on local rivals Lincoln City. The Mariners will also have a game in hand on their festive opponents who they beat 2-1 away on Boxing Day. A Lincoln revenge win is priced at 7/2.
Ebbsfleet United opened a gap of ten points on the sides in the relegation zone with a win over one of those teams, Hayes & Yeading United, on Monday.
That 3-1 victory at Stonebridge Road can be followed up at a price of 13/10 at Kingfield in the reverse fixture. Stockport County's 1-0 defeat at Barrow was their ninth league game without a win and the fifth game on the trot that they hadn't scored a goal.
Barrow are offered at 11/8 to extend the misery for the Edgeley Park faithful who see their side in the bottom two.
Alfreton Town are one of the most improved sides in the division and they showed that with a 5-2 win over Tamworth a few days ago. The odds of 2/1 for them to beat the same team in the space of just a few days may look too good to be true for some punters.
However, at this time of the year the previous results can be a dangerous trap and one only has to look at the switch in results in the Blue Square Bet North between Southport and Fleetwood two seasons ago before getting heavily involved. Southport winning their home game 5-0 and Fleetwood winning theirs 4-0 just days apart.
