ATTENDANCE BEST IN LEAGUE FOR NEARLY 50 YEARS

Monday Jan 9, 2012

ALFRETON Town's gate of 1,924 against Grimsby Town last Saturday was the best home league attendance for almost 48 years for the Reds.
It was a fixture which certainly caught the eye as former Reds favourite striker Liam Hearn returned to the Impact Arena for the first time since his move to Grimsby for an undisclosed five-figure fee last summer.
Grimsby were very much in-form with five wins and a draw from their last six and they were backed by a tremendous away following of 1,026.
Nicky Law's side were unbeaten in their previous four games but fell to a harsh-looking 5-2 defeat with Hearn scoring the first and third goals for the Mariners.
Alfreton's previous best was 47 years and nine months ago when Matlock Town won 4-3 in a Midland League game which attracted an attendance of 2,196 on October 12, 1963.
The Reds goals that day came from John Gissing, Peter Hawley and Jackie Lunn.
Incredibly, the previous season had seen 2,033 watch the home Midland League game against Loughborough United on April 27, 1963. The game finished all-square at 2-2 with Hawley and Wyld on target for Alfreton.

The Reds are back in action this Saturday with a long trek to the south coast to take on Southern League Premier Division side Weymouth in an FA Carlsberg Trophy second round tie.
ATFC Supporters' Association transport to the game departs at 7.30am. Seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251.
