ALFRETON WILL HAVE TO BUCK TREND AT TELFORD

ALFRETON WILL HAVE TO BUCK TREND AT TELFORD

Wednesday Feb 25, 2015

Alfreton Town head into another hugely important Vanarama Conference relegation six-pointer this Saturday as they travel to take on bottom-of-the-table AFC Telford United.

And, if Nicky Law's side are to finally climb out of the Vanarama Conference relegation zone, they are going to have to buck the trend of never winning in Shropshire so far to do so.

In seven previous visits to their nemesis of Telford's New Bucks Head in both Conference North and the Conference Premier Divisions, Alfreton have only managed to gain two points from two goalless draws and incredibly, only scored once.

And, given the precarious nature of both clubs' positions in the relegation zone, Saturday's game is absolutely huge. Telford lost 1-0 at Grimsby Town on Tuesday night to remain bottom of the pile and eight points behind Alfreton.

On a day when relegation rivals Aldershot Town face Dartford and Nuneaton Town take on Welling United, a win for Alfreton could finally lift them out of the bottom four and all but condemn Telford's fate this season.

After going down 3-2 at home to relegation rivals Aldershot Town last Saturday, a win which took the Hampshire side clear of the relegation zone, the Reds had Tuesday night's scheduled home game against Darford postponed due to a waterlogged Impact Arena playing surface and that fixture is now set to be played on Tuesday, March 24th.

For the trip to Telford, manager Nicky Law will be without defenders Niall Heaton who picked up a one-game suspension following a red card for a professional foul in the Aldershot game last weekend, and Callum Howe who has a minor injury which will keep him out of action for another week.

The only other absentee is long-term injury victim Duane Courtney who is making good progress from a hamstring tear.

Alfreton's next home game is against play-off hopefuls Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday, March 7th.
