ALFRETON TOWN v WELLING UNITED PREVIEW

ALFRETON TOWN v WELLING UNITED PREVIEW

Thursday Apr 3, 2014

By Matt Carter

Following Thursday night's Skrill Premier Division goalless game between FC Halifax Town and Braintree Town, Alfreton Town have been pushed out of the play-off places and they go into Saturday's home clash against Welling United in sixth place, knowing it is a must win game.
A return of one point from games against fellow top five chasers Halifax and Nuneaton has also not helped the promotion cause but a win on Saturday could lift the Reds back into the top five.
Saturday’s visitors have comfortably taken to life at the next level having achieved promotion in 2012/13, with their safety in the division now virtually guaranteed. Nonetheless Welling have only won once in five games, although that success did come last time out against struggling Chester.
Nicky Law’s side have already tasted victory against Welling, with Shaun Harrad’s penalty securing a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture in Kent back in January.
Encouragingly for the Reds for of the remaining six games at the Impact Arena where only they have lost only twice all season. Having endured two testing contests against rivals, this also represents the first of two home games in four days against sides lower down the table with Aldershot due to visit the Impact Arena on Tuesday night.
Undoubtedly both games with be tough but they represent a pivotal opportunity for Alfreton to move back into the play-off places and a remarkable top five finish.
Alfreton continue to be without both John McGrath and Michael Wylde who remain on the long term absentee list whilst a late check will need to be made on Nick Fenton. Chris Westwood was scheduled to return to training this week but is not expected to be fit enough for consideration for Saturday's game.
