Alfreton Town v Southport

Alfreton Town v Southport

Thursday Aug 17, 2017

This coming Saturday the Reds will be looking to continue their good form at the Impact Arena when Southport are the visitors for a 3 pm kick off.

The Sandgrounders have made a good start to the season since last season's relegation from the National League. Like us they have built almost an entirely new squad. They have won three and drawn one of their opening four games.

They began the season with a 4-0 home win over Boston United, this was followed by two away wins  2-1 at Bradford Park Avenue and 1-0 at newly promoted Leamington. Last Saturday saw them share the spoils in an exciting 3-3 home draw with FC United of Manchester. They were 3-1 down with just three minutes left scoring twice to earn  themselves an unlikely point. They are currently fourth in the table.

With the Reds having won both games at the Impact Arena, keeping clean sheets in both games, an interesting encounter is in prospect.

Bill Draper's amazing memory recall of the week,  informs us of the very first meeting between the two sides back in the 1984-85 season. This was an FA Cup Third Qualifying Round game at Haig Avenue. At the time we were members of the Northern Counties East League some two levels below Southport. We drew the first game 1-1 our scorer being Trevor Jones. We won the replay 3-0 back in Alfreton, with Mark Cox scoring twice and  the other goal coming from Ricky Greenhough. Bill of course was at both games.
