ALFRETON TOWN v SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC PREVIEW
Monday Nov 24, 2014
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25th, 7.45pm
Alfreton Town begin their 2014/15 season Derbyshire Senior Cup campaign on Tuesday evening when South Normanton Athletic are local derby visitors to the Impact Arena for a third round tie.
The sides have only met twice before in the competition, both being won convincingly by the Reds and both on home soil.
The first was in the 1994/95 season when Alfreton triumphed 7-1 and went on to win the trophy by beating Ilkeston 5-0 and 3-1 for an 8-1 final aggregate score.
The second time the sides met was in the 2010/11 campaign when the Reds won 6-1 at the Impact Arena.
Whilst league survival will be of paramount importance this season, Alfreton are well overdue a run in the county cup competition having not reached the final since the 2007/08 season when they lost overall to Belper Town, and the Reds have not won the trophy since 2002/03 when they triumphed 7-1 on aggregate in the final over Mickleover Sports, 5-0 away and 2-1 at home.
The Shiners are currently seventh in the East Midlands Counties League Premier Division and went down 3-1 at home to Bardon Hill in their latest outing last Saturday. The full league table can be viewed here
To reach this stage of the competition, South Normanton have won two home games at Lees Lane. They saw off Shirebrook Town 1-0 in the first round and Swanwick Pentrich Road 4-1 after extra time in the second round.
