ALFRETON TOWN v NUNEATON TOWN PREVIEW
Thursday Mar 27, 2014
By Matt Carter
Following defeat at Halifax on Monday night, Alfreton face another playoff rival in their latest Skrill Conference Premier Division fixture with Nuneaton visiting the Impact Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors currently occupy the final play-off spot and like Alfreton they were also defeated by another top five rival last time out – succumbing to a 1-0 home defeat at home to Grimsby Town last Saturday.
The Reds won’t have fond memories of facing Nuneaton, falling victim to Saturday’s opponents twice in the space of five days at the back end of November – in the first instance going down 3-0 in the reverse league fixture before losing 1-0 at home in the FA trophy.
Going back further Borough also defeated Alfreton twice during the 2012/13 season, with the Reds failing to register a goal.
Despite the disappointment in Yorkshire Alfreton should still enter this contest in strong spirits, considering prior to that they had gone four games unbeaten prior and at the same time they are on a run of seven games unbeaten in front of their own supporters.
With a host of clubs now knocking on the play-off door, a victory on Saturday afternoon is essential to keep those sides at arm’s length.
With successive home games against two sides in the bottom half of the table in the form of Welling United and Aldershot Town following this fixture, a positive result would provide a perfect platform to cementing a play-off position over the coming weeks.
Reds manager Nicky Law has no new injury worries but both John McGrath and Michael Wylde remain on the long term absentee list and Darran Kempson and Chris Westwood are doubtful.
Segregation is in place for this fixture and Nuneaton fans are requested to enter the Impact Arena stadium via the Alma Street turnstiles only.
