Blue Square Bet Premier Division
Alfreton Town v Grimsby Town
At the Impact Arena
by Kev Miles
FOR the first home game of 2012, Alfreton Town entertain a very much in-form Grimsby Town in Blue Square Bet Premier Division action at the Impact Arena.
Reds manager Nicky Law has a fully fit squad to choose from with Connor Franklin and Leigh Franks both shaking off hamstring injuries, Franks being available for the first time since he limped out of the Derbyshire Senior Cup tie at Gresley FC after just nine minutes on December 17th.
The Reds go into the game in good form also though being unbeaten in their last four league games with two wins and two draws.
Home form has also picked up and the last three games for points on home soil have all been won.
A victory could lift Nicky Law's side out of the bottom four for the first time in months.
Grimsby arrive top of the current form table with five wins and a draw in their last six outings. It is a run which has lifted them to 11th place, eight points outside of the play-offs.
The Mariners also possess the league's second highest goalscorer in Liam Hearn, one of Alfreton's most popular sons in the club's history, who visits the Reds for the first time since he moved to Blundell Park last summer.
The prolific hitman has 17 league goals (one behind Gateshead's Jon Shaw) and 19 in all competitions so far including a four-timer against the Reds in the first fixture between the two clubs back on October 1st when Alfreton had both James Ellison and Drewe Broughton sent off in an emimently forgettable 5-2 defeat.
One other notable player who has spent time at the Impact Arena is central midfield player Anthony Church who only returned to Grimsby at the start of the week after a successful spell on loan with the Reds and he looks to be in line to face his former Derbyshire team mates.
The Mariners have 38 points from 26 league games so far but have only picked up 12 of them on their travels with three wins and three draws tempered by six defeats. They have also found goals hard to come by away from home with 11 scored and 20 conceded which suggests another tight game is in prospect.
Away victories have been recorded against Forest Green Rovers (1-0), Kettering town (2-1) and Lincoln City (2-1) as recently as Boxing Day. They have shared the points with Newport County (0-0), Kidderminster Harriers (1-1) and Bath City (2-2).
Defeats have been tasted against Braintree Town (0-5) in the first away game of the season, Gateshead (2-1), Stockport County (2-0), Mansfield Town (2-1), York City (2-1) and Ebbsfleet United (3-1).
Managers Rob Scott Paul Hurst and have also strengthened their squad this week with the addition of former Kettering Town striker Kiernan Hughes-Mason.
In their last league outing, Grimsby Town recorded a 3-1 home win in front of 6,672 over Lincoln City on New Year's Day to wrap up a festive league double over the Imps.
The Mariners side was: James McKeown, Bradley Wood, Scott Garner, Ian Miller, Conor Townsend, Michael Coulson, Craig Disley, (Andi Thanoj 66 mins), Manny Panther, Frankie Artus, Anthony Elding, Liam Hearn.
Substitutes not used: Luke McCarthy, Gary Silk, Rob Duffy, Serge Makofo.
