Alfreton Town part ways with manager Russ O’Neill

Monday May 15, 2017

Alfreton Town can confirm that manager Russ O’Neill has left the club with immediate effect.

Chairman Wayne Bradley has confirmed a replacement for Russ O’Neill will be announced in due course.

The parting was an amicable one and Russ leaves the Reds with the best wishes of Chairman Wayne Bradley and all at Alfreton Town.

A totally trusted and highly valued assistant to manager Nicky Law, Russ O'Neill is held in very high esteem and completed his tenth campaign with the Reds, he took over from the departing Nicky Law in February and guided them to a 18th place finish in the National League North.

Russ has an infectious enthusiasm for the game and a hugely expansive knowledge of the non-league scene at all levels. He arrived at the Impact Arena along with Nicky Law in May 2007, having part of the successful management team at Buxton FC for two seasons.

As a midfield player, he began under Howard Kendall at Everton, where he spent four years, before having trials at Sheffield United and Leeds United. A knee injury ended his professional aspirations and after a short spell with Sheffield FC, he turned to management in Sunday League football. He was asked by Nicky Law, to join him at Buxton FC and then on to Alfreton where his vast array of contacts in the non-league game have come to the fore, with him being responsible for several signings since he joined the club.

Russ was an influential assistant alongside Nicky Law and witnessed relegation from the Conference Premier on the final day of the 2014/15 season. He worked with Nicky to keep the club at the top table of non-league football for four seasons after winning the Conference North title in 2010/11. The richly-deserved title success followed two successive third place finishes in the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons, with the Reds reaching the play-offs on both occasions, narrowly losing 2-1 to Fleetwood Town in the 2010 final.

Press Officer Amar Sharma spoke to Wayne Bradley about Russ’s departure from the Reds:

“It was a tough decision in the end; Russ arrived with Nicky in 2007 and has guided the club to some of its best times in history and has been there during the tough times. Russ is Alfreton through and through and he will always be a legend here, I have the greatest respect for him.”

“I have actively been looking at investment into the football club and there has been many decisions that have had to be made and relieving Russ of his duties was very hard but we have parted ways on very good terms and I wish him all the best in the future. We will make further announcements when appropriate regarding the vacant managerial role amongst other topics. It is important that we move forward positively.”

Amar also spoke to Russ O’Neill following the decision for Russ to leave the club:

“It’s been absolutely gut-wrenching for me; I go with a heavy heart. I’ve achieved so much here and I’ve had good times and bad but this club is a part of me and it always will be.”

“The lads gave it everything this season, the mission was to stay up and we did that and I couldn’t ask any more of the players who have been excellent this season but we have just struggled and it has been a tough campaign. I can’t put it into words the passion I have for the club and I have enjoyed every minute of my time here.”

“I think everyone needs to appreciate Wayne Bradley and what he has done for this club, he is such a massive part of Alfreton and I have so much respect for him. I know the club have been looking at investment and Wayne has been in conversation with investors and he kept me informed on the situation throughout, we had several meetings about the way forward.”

“I said to him that he needed to do what was best for the club and not let feelings get in the way, this is about what is best for the club and the future. I want to thank everyone for their support throughout my time, I want to thank Wayne, the directors, Nicky, all the players I have worked with. I want to thank all the staff on and off the field who make the club work so well.”

“I want to thank the fans, they have been incredible during my time here and without them this club wouldn’t be such a fantastic place to play football and their support out on the road. Good things do come to an end and I know this is the best decision for the club and I leave with sadness but this has been a privilege to be involved with Alfreton Town and I thank Wayne for the opportunity. I will be back at the Impact cheering the lads on that’s for sure.”

Alfreton Town would like to thank Russ O’Neill for his contribution, unwavering passion and commitment to the club and we wish Russ all the best for the future.

The Reds will be making further announcements regarding the Released and Retained list in due course.
