Alfreton Town part ways with manager John McDermott

Tuesday Jan 16, 2018

Alfreton Town can confirm that we have today parted ways with manager John McDermott with immediate effect.

The Club can also confirm that assistant manager Karl Lenighan and first team coach Chris Millington have also left the club.

John was appointed Reds boss in May 2017 following his departure from the position as Director of Football with Cleethorpes Town. As a player, he was a right-back from 1987 to 2007, spending his entire 20-year playing career at Grimsby Town, and holds the club's all-time appearance record, having played 647 league games, 754 games overall for the Mariners.

He is one of only 17 players in the history of English football to play more than 600 Football League matches for a single club. After retiring from football in April 2007, John began coaching at the Grimsby Institute Academy before being appointed assistant manager at Harrogate Town in 2010. John also received the PFA Merit Award in 2009, one of the highest awards a player can receive.

John made several high profile signings during his time at the Reds including Craig Disley, Brendon Daniels and re-signing Bradley Wood.

However results this season have contributed to a difficult campaign thus far and have left the Reds in 18th place in the National League North, a point clear of the drop zone.

Reds Chairman Wayne Bradley:

“I want to thank John and his backroom staff for efforts during their time at Alfreton Town. The season has not shaped the way we wanted it’s been a tough season so far. It makes sense for all to move on.”

“John, Karl and Chris go with our best wishes for the future and it was a decision the club had to make.”

All at ATFC thank John and his staff for their efforts since arriving at the club and we wish them all the best for the future.
