The Reds progressed into the First Round proper of the Buildbase FA Trophy with a 4-1 extra time win over Gainsborough Trinity in their replay on Wednesday evening. The first half was a very tight affair. Red's keeper Fabian Speiss pulled off a double save on the 5 minute mark. Former Red Laurie ilson, fired a long range effort over the bar a few minutes later. The visitors took the lead in the 38th minute when Jordan Thewlis pounced on a poor back pass and rounded Red's keeper Speiss.
The Reds nearly equalised on half time, when George Willis pulled off a fine close range save from an Adam Smith header.
Nicky Law made a treble substitution during the interval sending on sending on Craig Westcarr, Lam Hearn and Paul Marshall for Adam Smith, Adam Priestley and Kallum Mantack. The scoreline didnt change with Westcarr going close from a dangerous free kick, tipped over the bar by Willis. Three minutes from time Westcarr had another free kick from a similar position. This time he produced a tremendous strike that flew into the net, off the underside of the bar, to take the tie into extra time.
The Reds were much stronger in extra time, taking the lead through a Paul Clayton close range strike on 102 minutes. Clayton made the game safe with a simple tap in after excellent work on the bye line from Hearn. Westcarr made it 4-1 with a good finish in the last minute of extra time, to send the Reds through to play North Ferriby United, the 2015 winners. The game will take place at the Impact Arena on Saturday, December the 10th, Kick Off 3 pm.
