Alfreton Town bounced back to winning ways in style as they beat Torquay United 4-2 at the Impact Arena in an absorbing Vanarama Conference game witnessed by the BT Sport TV cameras.
Having suffered four straight defeats and gone over four-and-a-half games without scoring, the Reds certainly found their scoring boots against a United side who plied their trade in Sky Bet League Two last season and who would have gone second with a victory.
Despite having a Luke Graham header contentiously ruled out at 1-1, two goals from striker Karl Hawley against his former club, one from Tom Shaw and one from Paul Clayton were more than enough to earn a deserved victory over a United side for whom former Mansfield Town midfield man Louis Briscoe got both replies.
Alfreton took the lead on 18 minutes when Karl Hawley netted against his former employers and after Louis Briscoe had equalised with a neat turn and shot on the turn from 16 yards on 32, the Reds hit back to lead at the interval thanks to Tom Shaw's second goal of the season just before the half-time whistle.
Briscoe equalised for a second time for the Gulls but the second half belonged to Alfreton, led superbly by recalled striker and Reds man-of-the-match Paul Clayton who clipped home a fine shot to put the Reds back in the lead on 70 minutes.
Hawley took advantage of a defensive slip on 77 minutes to notch his second goal of the game and seal Alfreton's best display of the season.
