ALFRETON Town cruised into the second round of the FA Trophy with a wholly deserved victory over Blue Square Bet Premier Division high-flyers Southport at the Impact Arena.
The Reds have been threatening this sort of performance for a few games and they dominated throughout to make it four games unbeaten at home in all competitions and pick up £5000 in prize money and a first clean sheet in 22 games.
Southport had gone close on 17 minutes when Shaun Whalley saw his angled shot come back off the bar, but that was the nearest the visitors got in the whole game as the Reds defence, with Greg Young and Adam Quinn outstanding, maintained a stranglehold on the visiting forwards.
Anton Brown headed Alfreton in front from very close range on 38 minutes after Southport keeper Tony McMillan had done well to save a Nathan Jarman effort from close in.
Alfreton even spurned a penalty when Jarman curled his 42nd minute effort narrowly wide of the right-hand upright after Steve Akrigg had bundled Anthony Wilson over in the area.
However, the Reds went in 2-0 up at half-time when man of the match Anthony Wilson beat McMillan on his near post to finish a driven cross from the left byline by the impressive Jake Moult.
Two minutes into the second half it was game over as Jarman nonchalantly volleyed home from 12 yards for his ninth goal of the season after a Nathan Arnold shot had rebounded back off the bar.
Substitute Paul Clayton added the fourth on 80 minutes after he controlled a Connor Franklin ball into the box and then neatly finished past McMillan from ten yards into the far corner.
The attendance was: 394 with 20 from Southport.
The draw for the second round is on Monday, December 12.
