ALFRETON Town made their Premier Sports TV debut and showed the country what they are about with a deserved 4-3 home win over league leaders Newport County at the Impact Arena on Friday evening.
In front of 663, the Reds responded to the 2-0 midweek defeat by opening up a 2-0 lead inside just 17 minutes as they began with gusto and went on to lead 3-1 and 4-2 before seeing out a nervy final few minutes after the visitors had reduced the arrears to 4-3.
Man-of-the-match Nathan Arnold fired Nicky Law's side ahead on six minutes with a low shot from just inside the penalty area and the lead was doubled on 17 when Paul Clayton swept the ball high into the net from close range after Leigh Franks had headed down a Josh Law corner.
The visitors pulled one back on 35 minutes when Michael Smith steered the ball into the far corner of the net between two covering defenders on the line after winning a race for possession with home keeper Jon Stewart.
Alfreton went into half-time with a 3-1 lead as Dan Bradley smacked home from the penalty spot after David Pipe was adjudged to have brought down Ben Tomlinson in the area.
Newport fared better in the second half and reduced the arrears on the hour when Aaron O'Connor volleyed home from close range after keeper Stewart had palmed a Ben Swallow corner against the bar at the far post.
The Reds hit back and reopened a two-goal cushion when Clayton headed home another Law corner on 70 minutes.
Chances came and went at both ends before O'Connor ended the scoring on 89 minutes with a shot high into the net.
