Alfreton Town had their slim play-off hopes ended by a 3-3 home draw with Grimsby Town for whom the share of the spoils put something a dent in their own aspirations.

The game kicked-off 78 minutes late after Grimsby were held up in heavy traffic following an early morning accident on the M1. But once under way, an incident-packed game proved a cracking advert for Conference football.

The Reds - who came from behind three times to earn a first ever point in six league games against the Mariners - had grievances over several decisions on the day - or rather lack of them.
The first two Grimsby goals appeared offside and two clear penalties being denied to them in the dying minutes when Sam Hatton handled in the penalty area and Aswad Thomas clearly handled a John Akinde shot away from the line..

Ross Hannah was allowed to advance onto a ball over the top despite appearing offside on seven minutes and he went on to clip a shot across the advancing Jon Worsnop which went in-off the far post for the opener.

Alfreton equalised on 25 minutes when Paul Clayton set up Josh Law to fire home into the top corner despite Mariners keeper James McKeown getting a hand to the ball.

If there had been doubts about the first Grimsby goal, the second one was even more blatant with Hannah appearing at least two yards offside at the far post when he had a simple task in tapping in a cross from Lenell John-Lewis on 33 minutes to give the visitors a 2-1 half-time lead.

John Akinde netted for the fourth game in a row for Alfreton's second equaliser on 51 minutes as he steered home from the penalty spot after being tripped by Shaun Pearson.

A second penalty of the game saw Ross Hannah complete his hat-trick on 70 minutes after Darran Kempson tripped Shaun Pearson.

Alfreton fought valiantly to the end and got a deserved equaliser on 80 minutes when Paul Clayton pounced on a poor headed clearance by Aswad Thomas to net from close range.

Alfreton Town are back in action on Easte Monday when they travel to relegation-fighting Hereford United.
Kick-off is 3pm and ATFC Supporters' Association transport departs at 9am. Seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 07857 558401.
