A 90th minute goal from Ashley Worsfold (pictured) sealed a well-taken hat-trick and man-of-the-match performance and also ensured Alfreton Town saw off a battling Buxton 3-2 in the Derbyshire Senior Cup at the Impact Arena on Tuesday night.

The Reds had to come from two goals down to see off their Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division visitors who opened up their two-goal cushion with two strikes in six minutes early in the first half.

Michael Towey opened the scoring on 17 minutes when he steered home through Phil Barnes's legs from a narrow angle and on 23 minutes it was 2-0 when Lee Morris smashed home from the penalty spot after Anton Brown had fouled the striker.

Alfreton hit back strongly and reduced the arrears on 36 minutes when Ashley Worsfold netted his first goal for the club, turning the ball home from close range to finish a Josh Law corner.

If the first half had been a closely-contested affair, the second half was pretty much one-way traffic with Nicky Law's side dominating possession and chances.

The visiting defence led a charmed life, Worsfold hitting a post before he crashed home his second of the game on 64 minutes, smashing home a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

The pressure grew and Buxton keeper John Stanway was kept busy but he could only parry a stinging 90th minute shot from Nathan Arnold and Ashley Worsfold swooped to rifle home his hat-trick goal from six yards.

The Reds now meet Mickleover Royals in the quarter finals on a date to be confirmed.

Alfreton return to league action on Saturday with a trip to top-of-the-table Grimsby Town. ATFC Supporters' Association transport departs at  10.15am and seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 07857 558401.
