Alfreton Town 2-3 York City

Alfreton Town 2-3 York City

Monday Nov 13, 2017

Read our report as the Reds were again narrowly beaten on Saturday

Alfreton Town played some attractive, fluent football at home to York City on Saturday, but poor goals conceded once again saw them emerge from an entertaining encounter without reward.

Twice the Reds equalised, but were reduced to ten men in the 69th minute when Tom Platt picked up a second yellow card after harshly conceding a penalty in an innocuous challenge with Gary Martin, with journeyman Jon Parkin lashing the ball past Chris Elliott.

However Alfreton were awarded a spot-kick themselves just six minutes later after Sean Newton had handled a Brendon Daniels corner, but Bradley Wood saw his penalty saved by York keeper Adam Bartlett.

The opening goal for the Minstermen came from a fortuitous sliced shot by Aidan Connolly in the 13th minute that went in off the back post from an Alex Whittle cross, but the Reds were level 20 minutes later when Cieron Keane was able to pick his spot with a crisp left-footer from 12 yards from a superb square ball from Platt.

Parkin restored the visitors' advantage seven minutes into the second half when he converted Connolly's cross from close range, but a fantastic strike by Daniels four minutes later saw his free-kick sail into the net from at least 35 yards.

Chances for either side before the break had seen Reds' skipper Craig Disley clear off the line from Hamza Bencherif from a 30th minute corner, while Billy Priestley almost marked his return from injury with a back post header that went very close from a Ryan Jennings corner.

Another flag-kick from Jennings in the 48th minute glanced off the woodwork with Platt heading over, then two minutes later Tom Allan headed over from yet another corner, which he had earned himself, but York should have scored in the 62nd minute when Elliott could only parry an angled drive from Martin, with Disley throwing himself in front of Amari Morgan-Smith to block.
