Alfreton Town will face Chesterfield in the final of the Derbyshire Senior Cup after overcoming a resilient llkeston Town FC in Siberian conditions at the lmpact Arena on Tuesday night.

Brendon Daniels settled the issue with goals in the 68th and 71st minutes, having only come on as substitute 11 minutes into the second half, scoring initially direct from a trademark free-kick after being fouled just outside the area, and latterly by slotting home a Craig Westcarr pass after good work by Ryan Jennings.

The Reds were unable to play Nyal Bell, Ned Wagner nor new loan signing Elliot Green as they were registered after the original date for the tie - however special dispensation from Derbyshire FA was granted for keeper Viktor Johansson with Chris Elliott still nursing a broken nose, whilst Luke Shiels was serving a one-match suspension.

The visitors played their part by pushing forward whenever they could, belying the fact that they plied their trade four divisions below Alfreton, Jamie Walker's 12th minute sortie ending with a shot that curled wide, the same player repeating those actions later in the first half.

For the Reds Chris Sharp forced Jamie Hannis into a 28th minute save, but there was little else before the break for the visiting keeper to contend with - Johansson however had to react quickly as Alex Marshall raced through on 31 minutes, clearing the ball in unorthodox fashion with his back.

A much more positive start for Alfreton heralded the start of the second half, Hannis fumbling a Sharp drive before tipping over a Westcarr scorcher before Daniels took the tie by the scruff of the neck.

Marshall was proving to be a bit of a thorn in the Reds side though, denied again by Johansson before squandering a great chance to give llkeston hope with seven minutes remaining.

The real story behind the tie though was the band of volunteers who answered an appeal on social media to assist with the removal of the frost covers three hours before the game - however a mid-afternoon precipitation meant that snow had to be laboriously shovelled off the covers first.

Officials and supporters of the club were assisted by an array of helpers, including a member of the local Constabulary, the Kit Manageress, a postman, a Cricket Club associate, media guys from both teams and even, commendably, the match referee.

Even then further snow before the kick-off left a layer on the pitch, which necessitated rapid line clearing and a yellow ball to play with.
