Blue Square Bet Premier Division
Alfreton Town 2, Cambridge United 1
at the Impact Arena

ALFRETON Town edged nearer to securing their Blue Square Bet Premier Division status for a second season with a hard-earned win against a workmanlike Cambridge United side.
The Reds got off to a flier with a goal after just 59 seconds. It came courtesy of an own goal when Jonathon Thorpe, under no pressure, inexplicably headed a precision header into the top right corner from six yards out after a huge long throw from Theo Streete had cleared everyone at the front post.
Cambridge were also handed a gift to get back into the game on the half-hour. Nathan Jarman needlessly pulled Mustafa Tiryaki back in the penalty area and Andy Pugh smashed home the equaliser from the spot.
Reds man of the match Anthony Wilson provided the match winner on 54 minutes. His strength enabled him to win possession before he turned his marker neatly on the edge of the penalty area and steered in a delightful curling low right-footed shot into the bottom right corner which left Cambridge keeper Danny Naisbitt an admiring spectator.
The win saw the Reds maintain 16th place in the table but increase their cushion of points above the relegation places to seven.
The attendance was 965 with 229 making the trip from Cambridge.

Alfreton begin a spell of three successive away games when they travel to Kent on Tuesday to face Ebbsfleet United. ATFC Supporters' Association transport departs at 2.45pm.
