Alfreton Town 1 North Ferriby United 0
Sunday Dec 11, 2016
The Reds progressed into the Second Round Proper of the Buildbase FA Trophy, after a 1-0 win over National League side North Ferriby United at the Impact Arena. Ryan Wilson ensured safe passage for Alfreton with his stunning 63rd minute strike proving the difference.
It may not have been a classic tie but it was the Reds' second Conference National scalp of the season, having knocked Gateshead out of the F.A.Cup 52 days earlier, and they will have eagerly awaited news of Monday's draw. Just as he had in that aforementioned replay on Tyneside, Adam Smith hobbled off early in the game after bravely trying to continue.
Alfreton started brightly through his sprints down the right flank, one of which culminated in Sam Smith's first minute conversion being ruled off-side. The Smith combination worked again in the sixth minute, Sam's touch at the near post from Adam's cross gathered by visiting keeper Rory Watson, but it was a crucial tackle back by Niall Heaton that prevented Reece Thompson from firing Ferriby in front six minutes later.
Craig Westcarr had replaced Smith by the 16th minute, curling a free-kick towards goal that was held by Watson, then the substitute hooked wide after Andy Monkhouse had nodded a Heaton cross into his path, but the first half ended with Brad McGowan having to hook an awkward Curtis Bateson effort off the line.
Paul Clayton glanced a header wide from a Westcarr free-kick four minutes after the break, then Westcarr saw his header from a Monkhouse cross held by Watson, but the Villagers' keeper was helpless to prevent Wilson's 25 yard scorcher from flying into the top corner of the net completely out of the blue to give Alfreton the lead.
Clayton's 69th minute header was cleared off the line from a Wilson corner, then it was Fabian Spiess to the rescue with a reflex save from Ross Armstrong seven minutes later. Ferriby's last chance of the game drifted away from them in the 85th minute when Thompson headed over from close range in receipt of a Steve Brogan free-kick.
Never the less the Reds knocked the 2015 winners out of the competition and were good value for their win, ensuring a further £5,000 in the club's coffers. Monday's draw (12th December) for the Second Round of the FA Trophy see's Alfreton travel to either Boreham Wood or Maidstone United on the 14th January.
