Once again, Reds manager Nicky Law used the fixture to cast an eye over several trialists and one of them, Jamie Jackson, got onto a long punt downfield from keeper Jon Stewart and put Alfreton ahead as he fired home past Vale keeper Chris Neal with just five minutes gone.
It was the first goal Port Vale had conceded in what was their fourth pre-season outing so far.
However, the visitors hit back and equalised through Ryan Lloyd who finished a Louis Dodds cross to the far post from close range.
Shortly after, Chris Birchall had the ball in the net for Vale but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Just before half-time came what proved to be the winner with a Chris Lines free kick being headed over the line by Carl Dickinson.
At the end of the game, a thunderstorm of absolutely monsoon proportions ended with both changing rooms being left in standing water.
The Reds are back in action on Tuesday night when Walsall FC are the visitors to the Impact Arena for a second successive summer. The Saddlers romped to a 6-0 victory last year and are the third League One side to visit this summer following on from Chesterfield and Port Vale.
Kick-off is 7.30pm and admission is £10 for adults, £5 concessions and children under-12 just £1 each so long as they accompanied by a paying adult.
