Alfreton Town gave a very good account of themselves in their first pre-season run out as a full-strength Birmingham City took the honours with a 3-1 victory at a sun-drenched Impact Arena.
City fielded two different teams in each half whilst Alfreton began with a line-up which contained new signings Bradley Wood, Michael Wylde, Chris Westwood and Kristian Ramsey-Dickson who fired the Reds in front after just four minutes (pictured) when he finished Danny Meadows's lovely threaded ball across the edge of the six-yard area.
City equalised on 20 minutes when Olly Lee buried the ball into the top right corner for after an initial shot from Akwasi Asante was blocked.
Birmingham were handed, or rather headed the lead when latest Reds signing Chris Westwood unfortunately put through his own goal in trying to steer a cross back to his keeper on 32 minutes.
Another new signing, Tom Shaw, was introduced at half-time but with Alfreton also using seven trialists in the second half, the sharper-looking Blues dominated for a spell but the hosts hung in and were unlucky on a couple of occasions.
Birmingham sealed the win with a third goal on 47 minutes when Andrew Shinnie's low shot took a deflection but credit goes to both sides for producing some good football on a baking hot day.
The Reds are next in action on Saturday, July 13th when Burton Albion are the visitors to the Impact Arena. Kick-off is 3pm.
